Welcome to Steps Charity

We don’t take walking for granted

Steps is the leading UK charity supporting everyone whose lives are touched by childhood lower limb conditions. For many families, a diagnosis can bring a whirlwind of questions, worry, and uncertainty — and that’s where we come in. We are the only charity dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by both common and rare lower limb conditions.

With over 45 years of experience, we’ve listened to families, learned from lived experience, and stood alongside parents, carers, and young people at every stage. We offer trusted information, emotional support, and practical guidance when decisions feel big and the road ahead feels unclear — helping you feel informed, reassured, and confident in the choices you make.

We work closely with hospitals and clinicians across the UK, and alongside families who have been there, to make sure you can access the right knowledge, support, and care at the right time. Together, we help families navigate appointments, treatments, and day-to-day life — so no one feels alone, and every step forward is taken with confidence.

Why We Are Needed

Lower limb conditions can have a profound impact on mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Families often face uncertainty, complex medical terminology, and difficult decisions about treatment options.

Without clear, compassionate guidance and support, this journey can feel isolating and stressful.

Steps exists to bridge that gap. We ensure that no one has to navigate these challenges alone by offering expert-led resources and a supportive community.

The Latest News & Events…

This website has been developed with generous support from the Claire Furmedge Fund.

In 2007, Claire Furmedge, was sadly killed in an inflatable art structure at a park in County Durham. Claire was a dedicated supporter of Steps Charity over many years, as her daughter was diagnosed with a hip condition as a baby. A Fund to support our work was set up in her memory.
